Homozygous mutant segregants display aberrant sterile flower phenotype. The transition from secondary inflorescence to flower production is delayed. In place of floral meristems, additional secondary inflorescence meristems are produced. These are characterised by bract-like tissue instead of sepals and absence of petals. Mosaic floral organs ocur in later formed flowers. Most flowers are self fertile. Later formed flowers can be self-fertilised manually, as female parent.

The Pim gene is a MADS box gene required for flower development.
