The BBSRC Small-Grain germplasm collection comprises 18,911 accessions originates from the working collections of breeders within the Plant Breeding Institute (PBI) at Cambridge and the Cereal Departments of the Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI). As such, it represents the interest and outcome of about half a century endeavour of the UK public sector of plant breeding. In 1983, the collection fragments were unified at Trumpington and in 1990 it was moved to its current location at Norwich. Under the custodianship of the Germplasm Resources Unit at the John Innes Centre, the collection was registered with the Multilateral System of Access and Benefit-sharing of the International Treaty of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (the ITPGRFA) and is distributed internationally under the treaty framework and terms (SMTA).
